Anyway, a discussion at the local place has caused this mayhem, and has weirdly chased me into this blog somehow. Soooo.... whats up? Hows everyone? Im good, Right! The discussion was a long one spreding through lunchhour. We were discussion whats the best music in 2008, then evolving into why is music better this day and age? My response was "its like everything, it changes, gets better, poeple like it and it just keeps moving." Not the best quote in the world, it wont be used in a presidents speech or anything but its my point of view. So.. tell me! Is music better in 2008 and why? Hence for me a teenager in the late sixties and coming from Liverpool the Beatles age was the best music. However I like music from all different times. Including music of 2008. An indie band I like at the moment and of course from Liverpool is The Wombats if you havent heard of them have a look at check them out. Love that song, i heard it on a local music channel and its brilliant! Anyway.. i suppose it depends on the person. I get over songs quickly depending how addicted i get to them, but yet again thats just me and like you said baabaa, it depends on the time of your life and when you appriciate it more. Then the next night saw their gig which was v good...I have seen some of the video. Also they are coming to Oz at the end of this month so watch out for them. BaaBaa and James have both made some very valid points, but, the sad part about the music and entertainment industry these days is plastic, manufactured and shit. There are a couple of stand out exceptions, not that I can name them right now, but mostly anything that makes it into a top 40 chart these days can be done by anybody. That's right. YOU could be the next big thing as long as you look like a whore, but just pretend not to be one, and graciously accept the fact that a record company will be ruling your life for the next two years, or how ever long you last. Record companies are a whole different kettle of fish altogether. These leeches have a bottom line and they stick to it. You get signed to their label, work non stop for them during the promotion period for your album, then wait 10-15 months for your first cheque! Brilliant! From that $29 cd you bought, about $3.80 goes to the artist. Music companies wonder why there are pirates? Hmmm.... The charts are another pile of shit. In Australia, for example, up until a little while ago, chart positions were determained by store sales and not physical sales. So that meant that number one was dertermined by the ammount of single that music stores BOUGHT that week, not SOLD. It's all shit. Everyone is too scared to say anyhing about the state of the music industry in this country, because too many people are making money out of it. Money, it truly is the root of all evil. binkdonk Posted August 27, 2008 Share Posted August 27, 2008 I realize I may be showing my age a bit here, but I love the rock of the 70's & 80's. The hair metal bands, more so than the pop bands. Some of those guys are still around playing today, Kiss, Aerosmith -at least I think they're still going, soon we'll be going to museums to see them play instead of concert halls but it will be worth it. They are classic. I find that some of today's artists are so dependant upon the technology to perfect their sound (say in a recording studio) that they sound much different to hear them live. Most of the classics sound exactly the same live, as they did on their albums. Maybe it is just me getting older, but I'd have to say the music was much better in the late 70's and througout the 80's. Don't get me wrong, there are many artists today that I enjoy, I just don't pay as much attention to who they are - it seems as if so many come and go so quickly...can't keep up.;) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
